2-Methoxyethyl isothiocyanate

1-Isothiocyanato-2-methoxyethane is a benzyl derivative that has been shown to have anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo. It inhibits the enzyme activities of glutathione reductase, cytochrome p450, and mycobacterium. 1-Isothiocyanato-2-methoxyethane may have a role in cancer prevention due to its ability to induce apoptosis. 1-Isothiocyanato-2-methoxyethane also inhibits the biosynthesis of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which are natural substances found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and radishes. This agent has been shown to inhibit transcription of certain genes by binding to DNA at specific sites (e.g., tumor suppressor gene p53) and altering the shape of DNA molecules.
