3-Methylpicolinic acid
CAS:3-Methylpicolinic acid is a molecule that has been shown to have clinical use as a lipid-lowering agent. It has been shown to decrease the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in blood plasma by binding to the lipoprotein. 3-Methylpicolinic acid belongs to the class of molecules known as picolinic acid and is found in plants, fungi, animals, and humans. 3-Methylpicolinic acid is used for its metal ion chelating properties and can be used as an antidote for acute toxicity caused by metal ions such as mercury, arsenic, lead, and nickel. This compound also exists in two hydrated forms: monohydrated (3-methylpicoline) or dihydrated (2-(3-methylphenyl)acetic acid). The structure of 3-methylpicolinic acid is made up of a water molecule that coordinates with the metal ion at one end and a chloride ion at the other end.
