It has been shown to be hydrolyzed by alkylating agents such as bromides or propanoic acid. This prodrug has also been shown to have antiviral and antitumor properties in vitro. 2-Fluoro-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal RNA of the 50S subunit of the bacterial cell's ribosome. It is also a potent inhibitor of RNA synthesis in mammalian cells.
