It has been isolated from the oxime ether of 2-chloroacetophenone and an equimolar amount of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. The structure of this compound has been confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The compound reacts with ethers to form methyl ethers with high selectivity for the alpha position on the phenyl ring. The reaction rate is dependent on the substituents on the phenyl ring as well as the reaction conditions. This compound is used in organic chemistry as a structural analog for substituted pyridines.
