    CAS:
    5-Hydroxymethyluracil is a precursor of thymine and uracil. It is used as a therapeutic agent to prevent the formation of thymine dimers in human cells that have been exposed to radiation. 5-Hydroxymethyluracil is also used for the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout, as well as for the prevention and treatment of thrombotic disorders. 5-Hydroxymethyluracil is metabolized by hydroxylation, deamination, and oxidation to form xanthine, hypoxanthine, or uric acid. The most common analytical procedure for measuring plasma levels of 5-hydroxymethyluracil is mass spectrometry (MS). MS can be used in conjunction with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify mutations in wild-type strains of bacteria.
