3-Methyl-1,5-pentanediol is a monomer that is used to make polymers. It is often used in the production of glycol ethers, which are used as solvents or plasticizers. 3-Methyl-1,5-pentanediol has a hydroxyl group at position 3 and a viscosity of 0.822 dL/g. The molecule has a molecular weight of 146.17 g/mol and an activation energy of 25.8 kJ/mol. 3-Methyl-1,5-pentanediol occurs naturally as a component of fatty acids found in animals and plants, where it can be found in the form of esters with maleic acid or oleic acid. This monomer also occurs as an intermediate in the synthesis of vinyl alcohol.
