It is a tracer compound that has been used for the detection of water surface contamination. TBPTA has been shown to be effective at detecting low levels of contamination, which may be due to its ability to adsorb onto the surface of water and remain there for an extended period of time. TBPTA binds strongly to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT), and can be detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). This property makes it useful in coatings such as paints or varnishes, where it can be used to detect any damage that may occur over time.
