2-Tetradecanol is a long-chain primary alcohol that can be obtained from the hydrolysis of glycerin. It is a viscous liquid at room temperature, with a molecular weight of 296.2 g/mol and a density of 0.927 g/cm3. The 2-tetradecanol molecule contains two hydroxyl groups, which react with acetyl derivatives to form reaction products such as fatty acid esters and acetates. 2-Tetradecanol also has many biological properties, including its oxidation products, which are formed by reactions with oxygen in the air or by enzymatic activity that produce hydrogen peroxide and other reactive oxygen species (ROS). 2-Tetradecanol is an important nutrient for animals because it can be converted into glucose and fatty acids.
