(S)-Citadiol is a stereospecific, supercritical fluid extract of Salix alba L. that is obtained by extracting the bark with a solvent such as dichloromethane and then subjecting the extract to a process called chromatographic fractionation to purify it. The purified extract consists of two enantiomers, (S)-citadiol and (R)-citadiol, which are separated using an electrophoresis method. This is followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to separate them further. The chromatographic technique can be used to determine the purity of the product and its composition. (S)-Citadiol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in vitro and in vivo, as well as potent antioxidant activity in cells. It also inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-8 and TNF-α in vitro.
