2,4,5-Trimethylphenol is a phenolic compound that is found in urine. It has been shown to be effective at killing mosquitoes and other insects. 2,4,5-Trimethylphenol can be synthesized by reacting metal hydroxides with aliphatic hydrocarbons in the presence of acid catalysts under temperature and pressure conditions that are greater than atmospheric pressure. The reaction mechanism for this process is believed to involve the formation of an intermediate complex between the metal hydroxide and the aliphatic hydrocarbon and subsequent decomposition of this complex by the addition of acid. The reaction rate for this process depends on functional theory and kinetic data from experiments with other compounds.
