2-Butyne is a reactive organic compound that is found in the environment as an air pollutant. It can be used to produce other chemicals, such as ethylbenzene and phenol. 2-Butyne has been shown to inhibit the growth of epithelial cancers, including tumors of the breast, colon, and prostate. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but may be due to a hydroxyl group that reacts with chlorine atoms to form acid or inhibition of the production of fatty acids by blocking enzymes called group P2 lipases. 2-Butyne also has anti-inflammatory properties that are related to its ability to inhibit NS3 protease from degrading eicosanoids, which are involved in inflammatory responses.

2-Butyne is used to synthesize alkylated hydroquinones in the total synthesis of Vitamin E. It is also used as pharmaceutical intermediates.
