It is a coordination polymer with alternating single and double bonds between cyclooctadiene rings and ruthenium centers. The RuCl2(COD) complex has a square planar geometry, with the chloride ligands occupying one of the corners. The polymer exhibits bond cleavage reactions, which are characteristic of chloro compounds. It also undergoes oxidation reactions and can be reduced to the corresponding dichloride by sodium thiosulfate.
