CAS:Mellitic acid is a sodium salt of an inorganic acid. It has been used as a matrix effect agent to study the kinetics of solute transport through polymer films. Mellitic acid is also used as a substrate film for fluorescence spectrometry studies of the interaction between metal ions and polymers. The hydroxyl group on mellitic acid can form hydrogen bonds with the carboxylic acid groups in polymers, which may be responsible for its antimicrobial activity.
