3-Hydroxypyridine sodiumsalt is an inhibitor of the enzyme caspase-3, which is involved in the apoptotic process. It has been shown to inhibit recombinant caspase-3 from human and rat origins. 3-Hydroxypyridine sodiumsalt binds to the hydrophilic group on the catalytic site of caspase-3, preventing it from initiating apoptosis. This inhibition leads to a decrease in downstream events such as DNA fragmentation and cell death. 3-Hydroxypyridine sodiumsalt inhibits the activity of other enzymes that contain a pyridine ring, such as ethylene glycol monooxygenase and isatin oxidoreductase, with potency similar to that of hydrophilic inhibitors like pyridinium chlorochromate or hydrochloric acid.
