It is a white solid with a strong, unpleasant odor. 1-(2-Chlorophenyl)-2-thiourea is used as a pesticide to control nematodes and mites. It also has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other pesticides such as biphenyl, chlorinated biphenyls, and hydrochloric acid. The nucleophilic attack of 1-(2-Chlorophenyl)-2-thiourea on electrophiles leads to substitution reactions that are typical for thioureas. 1-(2-Chlorophenyl)-2-thiourea can be synthesized from hydrochloric acid and triethylbenzene in the following reaction: The reaction time for this process is about 2 hours at room temperature.
