Methyl 3-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-nitrobenzoate

Methyl 3-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-nitrobenzoate (HMB) is a maleimide that is used in the synthesis of amino-substituted azides. It was expressed as a recombinant protein in Escherichia coli and purified by solid-phase synthesis. The protein has been shown to bind to markers expressed at high levels in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains (e.g., ESX-1 secretion system protein) and inhibit cell growth in culture.
