Methyl 3,4-bis(benzyloxy)benzoate is a potent inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase. It binds to the active site of the enzyme and inhibits its catalytic activity. This drug has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against parasitic infections, such as malaria and toxoplasmosis. Methyl 3,4-bis(benzyloxy)benzoate also exhibits inhibitory activities against a number of other viruses and fungi, including HIV-1 protease and Candida albicans. This active form is endogenously produced from benzoic acid by a number of bacterial species including Enterobacteriaceae.
