16a-Hydroxy estrone is a metabolite of estradiol that has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in women. 16a-Hydroxy estrone can be found in human wastewater and maternal blood, indicating that it may be present in the environment. The genotoxic activity of 16a-hydroxy estrone has been demonstrated by its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and cellular transformation.
