(2S,3S)-(2S,3R)-2-Amino-3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid is an analog of the amino acid serine. The synthesis of this compound is a two step process that starts with the asymmetric synthesis of the L-(+)-serine methyl ester. This ester is then hydrolyzed to form (2S,3S)-(2S,3R)-2-amino-3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid. (2S,3S)-(2S,3R)-2-Amino-3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. It also inhibits serine proteases by binding to their active site and inhibiting their function. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in human pancreatic cells.
