4-(Benzoylamino)benzoic acid (4BABA) is a molecule that has been shown to have a tuberculostatic activity. It binds to the enzyme RNA polymerase and thereby inhibits transcription of the genes, which are required for bacterial growth. 4BABA is also able to inhibit the synthesis of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids, which are important mediators in inflammation and blood pressure regulation. This compound is absorbed rapidly after oral administration and has a half-life of approximately 5 hours. The low potency of this molecule may be due to its high lipophilicity, which makes it poorly soluble in water. 4BABA has been shown to have an amide bond with a molecular weight of 213 Da, with FT-IR spectroscopy indicating an aromatic structure.
