    3,3'-Dimethylazobenzene is an insoluble molecule that is a precursor to the azobenzene class of compounds. Azobenzenes are typically used in dyes and other organic syntheses as well as catalytic hydrogen peroxide generators. 3,3'-Dimethylazobenzene can be converted to its corresponding amine by treatment with dilithium. This compound may also react with anionic ligands such as phosphines or perfluorinated anions to form stable complexes. 3,3'-Dimethylazobenzene can polymerize when exposed to tetrahydrofuran and form polymers that are soluble in organic solvents.
