Niacin is a water-soluble B vitamin with antihyperlipidemic effects, found in food and converted to niacinamide for coenzyme activity.

Niacin, also known as nicotinic acid or vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for the proper metabolism of fat and carbohydrates. Niacin lowers low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels by reducing the production of apolipoprotein B by the liver. This effect has been shown in both human and animal models. It is also important for maintaining healthy skin, eyes, and nerves. Niacin has been shown to be effective in treating bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In addition to its lipid-lowering effects, it can also improve the function of mitochondria in cells.

Applications Nicotinic acid. It is a precursor of the coenzymes NAD and NADP. Widely distributed in nature; appreciable amounts are found in liver , fish, yeast and cereal grains. Dietary deficiency is associated with pellagra. The term “niacin” has also been applied to nicotinamide or to other derivatives exhibiting the biological activity of nicotinic acid.
