    1-(3-Hydroxypropyl)-3,7-dimethylpurine-2,6-dione (1,7-dimethylxanthine) is a methylxanthine that stimulates the heart and respiratory system. It can be used to dilute oral pharmaceutical preparations or to prepare injectable solutions. 1,7-Dimethylxanthine has been shown to have inotropic effects and is able to stimulate protein synthesis. It also inhibits the breakdown of adenosine by phosphodiesterase and blocks the activity of phosphodiesterases IIA and III. This agent also has bronchodilatory properties which may be due to its ability to inhibit phosphodiesterase IV.
