NSC 146109 has been shown to inhibit protease activity and fatty acid synthesis, which are both required for tumor cell growth. It also prevents the inhibition of p21, an inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases. In addition, NSC 146109 induces mitochondrial membrane potential and nuclear DNA fragmentation, leading to apoptosis.
