p-Rosolic Acid

Rosolic acid is used as a pH indicator in the range from 5.0 to 6.8. It acts as an intermediate in the manufacturing dyes. It is involved in the activation of heme oxygenase and in the inhibition of DNA fragmentation. It finds application in the selective isolation of coliform bacteria. Aurin is a novel drug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and congestive heart failure. Aurin is a prodrug that is metabolized by hydrolysis to aurin monophosphate (AMP), which inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). AMP also inhibits the activity of many enzymes, including cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, phospholipases, and nitric oxide synthases. This inhibition leads to an anti-inflammatory effect by decreasing prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and nitric oxide production.
