2,6-Dinitrotoluene is an intermediate in the synthesis of explosives. It is a metabolite of 1,2,4-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and has been shown to be genotoxic in CD-1 mice. 2,6-Dinitrotoluene has been found to have toxicological effects on tissue culture cells (e.g., inhibition of DNA and protein synthesis). The metabolic fate of 2,6-dinitrotoluene is not well understood and may involve glucuronide conjugation or intramolecular hydrogen transfer. In vitro studies have demonstrated that 2,6-dinitrotoluene can act as a solid catalyst for fatty acid oxidation reactions.
