This molecule has been shown to have a fluorescence spectrum that is very similar to the natural product phthalocyanine, which is used as a fluorophore for the detection of proteins and other biomolecules. The optical properties of anthracene-2-carboxylic acid can be modified by complex formation with multi-walled carbon nanotubes or ternary complexes with metal ions and surfactants. This molecule has also been shown to have surface-enhanced Raman and electrochemical properties.
