This molecule is structurally similar to the fluoroquinolones, but it is not active against bacteria. 9-Fluorenone-4-carboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the activity of chemosensors, which are molecules that respond to chemicals in the environment by changing their conformation and emitting light. These conformational changes can be detected with a fluorescent chemosensor, making this compound useful for detecting low concentrations of chloride ions. 9-Fluorenone-4-carboxylic acid has also been shown to bind to allosteric sites on ligand gated ion channels and open them up, which leads to increased permeability of potassium ions through the channel.
