Trazodone is a serotonin antagonist that can be used for the treatment of depression and anxiety. Trazodone has been shown to inhibit the activity of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) in vitro, which may be due to its high affinity for this enzyme. Trazodone also inhibits the efflux of cGMP from tumor cells, leading to increased intracellular levels of cGMP, which can lead to tumor cell death. Trazodone also binds to a ligand-gated ion channel on the surface of prostate cancer cells, causing them to stop proliferating and die.
