5-Hydroxydecanoic acid sodium salt is a gadolinium contrast agent that has been used in magnetic resonance imaging. It binds to the calcium channels in the mitochondria membrane and blocks the influx of Ca2+, which prevents mitochondrial Ca2+ overload and subsequent ATP depletion. The 5-hydroxydecanoic acid sodium salt is also a fatty acid with an hydroxyl group at its end, which may be involved in apoptosis protein activation. 5-Hydroxydecanoic acid sodium salt inhibits cardiac contractility by inhibiting the depolarization of papillary muscles and myocardial infarct size via prevention of ventricular dysfunction.
