1-Chloro-2-iodoethane

1-Chloro-2-iodoethane (stabilized with Copper chip) is an active chemical that reacts with nucleophilic groups to form a new compound. It has been shown to react with hydroxyl groups in mammalian cells and other tissue samples to form 1-chloro-2-hydroxyethane, which is the active chemical. The carbonyl group of 1-chloro-2-iodoethane can also interact with other carbonyl groups through steric interactions. The nucleophilic attack of the carbonyl group on the hydroxyl group leads to a molecule that contains both a ketone and an alcohol functional group. This molecule can be classified as either a divalent hydrocarbon or an ionic species, depending on whether it is protonated or not. The vibrational and optical properties of this molecule are determined by its molecular structure.

1-Chloro-2-iodoethane is used as a mild electrophile for iodination of metallated species, as in the conversion of an ortho-lithiated benzyl ether to the corresponding ortho-iodide. It reacts with 5-hydroxy-[1,4]naphthoquinone, and obtain the 5-(2-chloro-ethoxy)-[1,4]naphthoquinone.
