The cis form of 1,4-cyclohexadiene has been shown to be a ligand for the 2-adrenergic receptor and has been implicated in the biological properties of this receptor. The trans form of 1,4-cyclohexadiene has been shown to react with malonic acid in an asymmetric synthesis reaction to produce racemic 1,4-cyclohexadiene. This reaction mechanism has also been observed with other unsaturated cyclic molecules such as 5-norbornene and 2-methylenecyclopentane.
