1,4-Cyclohexadiene (stabilized with BHT) is a biologically active molecule that is used in organic synthesis. It is an organic compound that exists as two enantiomers, cis and trans. The cis form of 1,4-cyclohexadiene has been shown to be a ligand for the 2-adrenergic receptor and has been implicated in the biological properties of this receptor. The trans form of 1,4-cyclohexadiene has been shown to react with malonic acid in an asymmetric synthesis reaction to produce racemic 1,4-cyclohexadiene. This reaction mechanism has also been observed with other unsaturated cyclic molecules such as 5-norbornene and 2-methylenecyclopentane. 1,4-Cyclohexadiene is used to study the formation of parent ion from heavy fragmentation on irradiation with a high-intensity laser pulse. It is also used as a very effective hydrogen donor for catalytic hydrogenation reaction. It forms benzene at elevated temperatures in the presence of a ruthenium(II)-triphenylphosphine catalyst.
