CAS:5-Methyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine is a mutagenic heterocyclic amine that is structurally similar to the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene. It has been shown to be a potent mutagen in bacteria, especially Salmonella TA100, with an EC50 of 0.5 mM. 5-Methyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine has also been shown to have mutagenic activity in mammalian cells. This chemical is found in fried bacon and other foods containing other heterocyclic amines such as 2,4,6-trichlorophenol or 2,3,7,8,-tetrachlorodibenzo[p]dioxin.
