Tylosin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis. Tylosin 3-acetate is an orally active form of the drug that has been shown to have regulatory effects on the immune system. The affinity of this drug for ribosomes may be due to its similarity in chemical structure to endogenous molecules, such as tyrosine. Tylosin 3-acetate has also been shown to have arthritic properties, which are thought to be due to its inhibition of prostaglandins.
