Enkephalin is a peptide belonging to the group of opioid drugs. It is a neurotransmitter that binds to kappa-opioid receptors and μ-opioid receptors. Enkephalin has been shown to inhibit voltage-dependent calcium channels and mitochondrial membrane potential in neurons, which leads to neuronal death.
