It is used as an intermediate in the production of fluorine compounds and has been shown to have toxic effects on the liver. Methyl 2,3,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-bromobutyrate has been shown to cause depression in rats at a dose of 1 g/kg. The LD50 values for acute toxicity are 25 mg/kg for mice and rats.
