It is prepared by the reaction of formaldehyde with chloroacetyl chloride in the presence of an alkaline solution. This compound can also be obtained from the reaction of benzene and sodium methoxide in methanol. 4-Chloro-5-methoxypyridazin-3(2H)-one has been used to synthesize various products, including methyl groups and formyl groups. The byproducts include chloride and carbonium ion, which are formed during the solvolysis process of this compound.
