3-Methylmercaptopropionic Acid

3-Methylthiopropionic acid is a bacterial metabolite that can serve as an alternative carbon source for the production of amino acids. 3-Methylthiopropionic acid is used to study the effect of matrix on enzyme activities, and has been shown to have protein-binding properties. The compound also serves as a precursor in the synthesis of tiglic acid, which is a lysine precursor. 3-Methylthiopropionic acid has been found to be effective in slowing the growth of cancer cells. It has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthesis, and may also inhibit methionine synthetase activity and cell proliferation.
