This product has been shown to react with hydrogen fluoride and form a carbon nanotube, which is a new type of material with applications in electronics and biotechnology. 3-Fluorophthalic anhydride also reacts with phenoxy to form a reactive intermediate that can be used as a bioactive substance. It can be used for the synthesis of phase-separated polymers by reacting it with diisopropylidene diacrylate or methylenebisacrylamide. The properties of the polymer depend on the reaction conditions and the combination of monomers. 3-Fluorophthalic anhydride has been shown to have activity against endogenously produced proteins such as e3 ubiquitin, which regulates protein degradation in cells.
