    Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin that is important in bone metabolism. It is a basic protein that can be converted to its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3), by the liver. Vitamin D3 has been shown to have anti-proliferative effects in HL-60 cells and to inhibit the growth of mycobacterium tuberculosis in mice. Vitamin D3 also has an effect on blood pressure and may be beneficial for patients with chronic bowel disease. Vitamin D3 is found in many foods such as fish, eggs, and dairy products. There are two major forms of vitamin D: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).
