2-methyl-1,3-benzothiazol-6-ol (MBTO) is an antiviral agent that inhibits the synthesis of RNA in certain viruses. It binds to the enzyme RNA polymerase, inhibiting its activity and preventing the production of viral RNA. MBTO has been found to be effective against alphaviruses and phleboviruses, but not against flaviviruses or coronaviruses. The antiviral effect of MBTO is selective for influenza A virus strains. It has also been shown to inhibit yellow fever virus at μM range and Japanese encephalitis virus at a lower concentration. MBTO has no effect on virions such as HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1, or hepatitis C virus.
