DPBQ is a synthetic antioxidant that is stable against light and heat. It is synthesized by the reaction of a carbonyl group with a vinylene group, and has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which can lead to atherosclerosis. The second-order rate constant for the oxidation of DPBQ was found to be 2.6 × 10 M s, which is slower than that of α-tocopherol (2.7 × 10 M s). This chemical also has antioxidative activity and can be used as a synthetic antioxidant in organic solutions.
