CAS:Bis(1,3-dibutylbarbituric acid) trimethine oxonol is a cationic dye that can be used to stain and detect the presence of anionic lipids. It has been shown to bind to the anionic lipid head groups in bilayers, which may be due to its ability to introduce positive charge into the bilayer. This binding induces changes in the cell membrane structure and leads to cell death. Bis(1,3-dibutylbarbituric acid) trimethine oxonol has also been shown to inhibit ion channels by acting as a cation (positively charged).
