The reaction between succinic acid and ethylene glycol generates reactive oxygen species that can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal death. This chemical inhibits mitotic checkpoint by binding to lysine residues on the kinetochore protein complex that is responsible for holding chromosomes together during mitosis. It also binds to receptor molecules on the cell surface, such as peptide hormones, that regulate cell division.
