Indomethacin is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are mediators of inflammation. Indomethacin is used to treat pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, gouty arthritis, menstrual cramps, ankylosing spondylitis, and other types of inflammatory conditions. The activity of indomethacin is due to its ability to inhibit COX-2 in a selective manner. This drug has no effect on COX-1, which has a role in the production of protective prostaglandins that maintain the stomach lining and protect against stomach acid.
