It is used as a ligand in binding assays to measure the affinity of various compounds for estrogens. Estra-1,3,5(10),6-tetraene-3,17-diol binds with high affinity to 17β-estradiol and other estrogens at the estrogen receptor. The binding of estradiol and its derivatives to the receptor leads to a conformational change that causes dissociation of heat shock proteins from the receptor.
