Methanesulfonic acid is used as a catalyst in organic reactions namely esterification, alkylation and condensation reactions due to its non- volatile nature and solubility in organic solvents. It reacts with sodium borohydride in presence of polar solvent tetrahydrofuran to prepare borane-tetrahydrofuran complex. Methanesulfonic acid is a strong oxidizing agent that has been used for the treatment of infectious diseases and to induce remission in inflammatory bowel disease. Methanesulfonic acid is used as an analytical reagent in biochemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. It has been used to measure cortisol concentration in blood samples. Methanesulfonic acid has been shown to increase the transcriptional activity of NF-κB by inducing the phosphorylation of IκBα. This leads to increased transcription of genes encoding cytokines that are involved in inflammation, leading to physiological effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can be measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
