5,6-Dimethoxy-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one (DMBA) is a modulating agent that interacts with DNA and alters transcription. DMBA has been shown to inhibit the growth of squamous carcinoma cells through demethylation of fatty acids in the cell membrane. DMBA is thought to act as an inhibitor of erythromycin, due to its similarity to erythromycin's chemical structure. It also acts as a competitive inhibitor of butyric acid synthesis and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. The molecular modeling studies show that DMBA binds strongly to nitro groups and hydrochloric acid, which may explain its anti-inflammatory properties. This drug also has a blood group incompatibility effect and can be used for treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis.
