2-Butyne-1-ol is a reactive and cytotoxic molecule that can be used in the synthesis of polylactic acid. It is synthesized from butanol by reaction with sodium carbonate, which yields 2-butylene glycol and water. The protonation of 2-butylene glycol generates the corresponding alcohol, which is then converted to the desired product using a stereoselective and asymmetric synthesis. This compound has been shown to have anticancer properties due to its ability to inhibit cellular respiration.
