Nonanoyl chloride is an organic compound that is used as a reactive functional group in detergent compositions. It reacts with hydroxide to form a chemical substance with a carbonyl group and an acyl chain. Nonanoyl chloride can be used to treat eye disorders, such as allergic reactions and inflammatory diseases, such as fatty acid. Nonanoyl chloride also has anti-cancer properties and can be used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

Nonanoyl chloride is used for the acylation of amine groups of chitosan to simultaneously improve its material properties and adsorption capacity. It was also used in the synthesis of N-nonanoyl piperonylamide, caged vanilloid, N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-N-(2-nitrobenzyl)-nonanoylamide or N-(2-Nitrobenzyl)-N-vanillyl-nonanoylamide, n-benzylnonanamide.
